VolunteersVolunteers are an important part of the VNA Team.   There are a number of opportunities for volunteers to contribute their talent and time to the Visiting Nurse Association and the patients and families we serve.  Typically, VNA volunteers commit to one or two days per week for 2-3 hours each shift.  We can’t emphasize enough how grateful we are to our Volunteers for all of their contributions.

What can you do to help as a volunteer?

  • Provide companionship to patients in their home where ever home is.
  • Perform clerical work, such as answer phones and filing and help with special projects at the main office.
  • Assist at special events/programs held throughout the year.
  • Serve as a greeter/receptionist.
  • Assist patients and their families.
  • Offer a smile, listen, hold a hand.

Process to become a volunteer:

Contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 570-383-5180 and express your interest in volunteering.

Schedule an Interview:  this is a great opportunity to learn more about VNA, the volunteer program and discuss the special talents that you are willing to share with us.  The interview will determine if VNA is a good fit for you and if you are a good fit for us.

Begin the Application Process:  The process includes completing a volunteer application, listing personal reference that we may contact, undergoing a criminal background check, drug screen, and obtaining health clearances including a two-step PPD.  The application process may seem overwhelming, however, it is necessary to meet the Department of Health requirements and the Medicare Conditions of Participation.  We take our responsibility and commitment to our patients and their families very seriously.   We need to be sure that all members of the VNA team are trustworthy and safe.  All costs associated with the Background Check, drug screen and two step PPD test will be covered by VNA.

Orientation:  Once all of the references/clearances are returned satisfactorily we can schedule orientation.  Orientation will explain in detail the history/mission/vision of VNA, the philosophy of hospice and palliative care and the duties and responsibilities of volunteers who work for our agency and your assignment in the agency.  Also, you will be introduced to the members of our leadership team and assigned a volunteer mentor.

Assignment:  Once orientation is complete you may begin volunteering.

Our volunteers receive ongoing educational opportunities throughout the year through meetings, conferences and day to day interaction with our team members.  Additionally, we host an annual volunteer appreciation party to celebrate and thank our volunteers for their contributions.
